The benefits of Tae Kwon Do for children are improved mental and physical growth.  More and more parents and teachers are finding it advantageous for children to be educated in the martial arts, especially in the areas of self-control, focus and discipline.  Tae Kwon Do teaches children how to learn and provides them with a solid foundation for sound thinking and making positive decisions.  We strongly encourage children to live according to the Tenets of Tae Kwon Do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perserverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit.  The staff at Discovery Tae Kwon Do adds to this important list: Honesty and Humility.  Tae Kwon Do training prepares a child to better understand and cope with today's ever-changing world.

All martial arts have one basic purpose: they teach the art of self-defense.

What do we mean by art?

The art of any physical endeavor is the mastery of both the physical and mental aspects of the activity. Children continually strive to improve their martial arts  techniques. Through that improvement, they achieve not only physical benefits, but also increased self-confidence, focus, discipline, coordination and a better understanding of their ability to set and reach goals.

What are the physical benefits of Tae Kwon Do?

Proper Tae Kwon Do training leads to increased flexibility, strength, cardiovascular capability and physical coordination. In addition to being an excellent physical workout, Tae Kwon Do also incorporates many of the more intangible benefits of traditional school sports, such as teamwork and sportsmanship. For those children who, for whatever reason, don't enjoy "competing," martial arts puts each child on his or her own path within a structured environment to be the best that he or she can be.

Discovery Tae Kwon Do is not a tournament-oriented school, but rather an "old-style" martial arts school with traditional values and standards. Some children will want to compete formally; others will choose not to. Both choices are fully respected and supported.
